What is multi-sensory learning?

Multi-sensory or multimodal learning is all about encouraging learners to use more than one of their senses when taking in new information. This learning style promotes using activities that appeal to our visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile senses.

Multi-sensory or multimodal learning is a particularly popular teaching method for children who have learning differences such as Dyslexia or ADHD, or those with learning disabilities. However, it's also beneficial for ALL learners as it provides a variety of ways for children to access the learning. Below are the most popular types of sensory learning:

  • Auditory - learning through sounds, hearing and listening.
  • Visual - learning through seeing and watching.
  • Tactile - learning through using our sense of touch.
  • Kinesthetic - learning through body movement or physical activity (this uses the proprioceptive and vestibular senses).

How To Use The Resource:

Step 1. Number Identification: Number Road Maps

Laminate the "Number Road Maps" or put them into a clear sleeve. Your child can use large movements to trace each number as you say the number rhyme. Have them trace the letter using their finger, a toy car, or an action figure! Use the road maps as a play dough mat by forming each number out of play dough. Your child is learning both the number name and how to write the number at the same time!

Step 2. Handwriting Practice.

Your child can trace and then write the numbers on their own as they recite the rhymes. At first, you will need to say the rhymes and your child can repeat. Eventually, they will pick it up on their own!

Enjoy!
